Steps For Sewage Treatment

Effective Approach to Sewage Spill Remediation

Step 1: Immediate Response

Turn off electrical power in the area that has been flooded. It can be unsafe to have electrical wires, extension cords or any electrical fixtures contacting standing water. Sewage contaminated areas contain contaminants that can cause serious illness or disease. Disease causing agents in raw sewage include bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.

Step 2: Scope Sewage Backup and Contamination

An inspection for mold or other contaminants is necessary to determine how much cleaning needs to be done. It is adequate to wear full PPE to keep from touching any harmful substances. Sewage backups can contain bio-hazards that can be very harmful, like feces.

Step 3: Decide Who is Going to Perform the Remediation

It is best to hire professionals to do the cleaning due to all the safety concerns. Some reasons why hiring a professional is the way to go:

- You or building occupants are people at extra risk: asthma, elderly, compromised immune system, infants

- The total area of contamination and scope of work are just too large for you to handle

- Your insurance company is paying for the clean-up

- Sewage spill has been in place for 24 hours or longer

Step 4: Remove Salvageable and Non Salvageable Contents

Contents that need to be disposed are wet carpets, padding, wet upholstered furniture, and curtains. If walls are covered with wallpaper it should be removed as well. Salvageable contents are hard-surfaced furniture, dishes, plastic items. If weather permits place content outdoors in a sheltered area.

Step 5: Demolition and Removal of Wastewater Contaminated Materials

Remove all contaminated drywall, carpeting, carpet padding, paneling, building insulation or other materials in the affected area. Remove all porous material such as cardboard, paper, books, cloths, mattresses, curtains, and stuffed animals.

Valuable area rugs or carpets can sometimes be cleaned and sanitized by a carpet professional.

Step 6: Disinfect Area as Quickly as Possible

Remove standing water using buckets and water-removing shop vac. Collect and discard solid waste. Always check with local health department about requirements for bagging and disposal of solid sewage waste if it cannot be disposed-of into the public sewer system. Prepare the affected area for rapid drying and open lower wall cavities for the full length of walls along floors that were soaked with sewage effluent even if you do not see water stains on the upper walls themselves.

Step 7: Dry the Affected Area as Rapidly as Possible

Dehumidifiers and portable fans must be on for 24-48 hours to dry the wet building area.
